Byrna Gun Review: Cost, Performance & Less-Lethal Self-Defense (2026 Guide)

Byrna SD Pepper spray and tear geas guns new kits back

Byrna guns have quickly become one of the most talked-about self-defense tools on the market—and for good reason. They offer a unique middle ground between pepper spray and firearms, giving everyday people a powerful, non-lethal option for personal and home protection.

In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about the Byrna gun, including real-world performance, current cost, pros and cons, and how it compares to a traditional pepper gun or other less-lethal weapons. This isn’t marketing fluff—this is a practical, experience-based review designed to help you decide if a Byrna launcher is the right self-defense solution for you.

Whether you’re researching your first self-defense tool, comparing Byrna to pepper spray, or trying to understand what makes Byrna different from other less-lethal options, this page is built to give you clear answers—fast.

What Is a Byrna Gun?

A Byrna gun is a CO₂-powered, less-lethal self-defense launcher designed to stop threats without using lethal force. Unlike firearms, Byrna launchers fire .68-caliber projectiles—such as pepper, kinetic, or chemical irritant rounds—using compressed CO₂ instead of gunpowder.

What sets a Byrna apart from traditional self-defense tools is its range, accuracy, and controllability. While pepper spray is limited to close distances and can be affected by wind, a Byrna launcher allows users to engage a threat from several yards away with far greater precision.

Byrna launchers are commonly used for:

✅ Home defense
✅ Vehicle defense
✅ Property protection
✅ Personal safety for people who don’t want a firearm

Because Byrna launchers are classified as less-lethal, they are legal to own in most U.S. states without permits or background checks (shipping restrictions may apply in certain areas).

In short, a Byrna gun fills the gap between pepper spray and firearms, offering a serious defensive option without the permanent consequences of lethal force.

The How on Byrna Gun Warranty Registration

The How To

Registering your Byrna launcher is one of the smartest first steps after purchase. Warranty registration helps confirm ownership, supports warranty service, and ensures you receive important safety notices or product updates.

🔎 Where to Find the Serial Number

On Byrna models that include a serial number, it is typically located behind the trigger area near the base of the barrel. Not all Byrna launchers have serial numbers, and the absence of a serial number does not automatically disqualify a launcher from service or support.

📝 How to Register Your Byrna Warranty

You can register your Byrna directly through Byrna’s official support portal.

Byrna Gun Maintenance, Oiling & Long-Term Care

General Byrna Maintenance Rules (All Models)

Proper maintenance keeps your Byrna launcher reliable, accurate, and ready when you need it. Unlike firearms, Byrna launchers are CO₂-powered and require minimal upkeep, but a few simple habits will dramatically extend their lifespan.

General Byrna Maintenance Rules (All Models)

All Byrna launchers share the same core care principles:

Do not leave a pierced CO₂ cartridge installed when not in use
Leaving CO₂ pressurized for long periods can dry out seals and reduce reliability.

Use Byrna-approved oil only (we highly recommend the Byrna Oiler Kit for all pepper guns)
Never use firearm oil, WD-40, or petroleum-based lubricants. Byrna launchers are designed to be lubricated with Byrna’s approved oil (the oil included in the Byrna Oiler Kit is a mineral lubricant oil) to keep internal seals operating correctly and reduce wear. Perform oiling using Byrna’s method (oil guide + a few drops into the CO₂ chamber), as outlined in Byrna’s maintenance instructions/manual.

Use Byrna-branded oil CO₂ cartridges
Byrna offers oil-infused CO₂ cartridges, which are always included in CO₂ packages.

These help automatically lubricate internal seals during normal use and are recommended for routine maintenance.

You Put there C02 Cartridge in and Train with it using all shots until the co2 is empty. The c02 puts oil into your Byrna gun while you train.

Wipe down after handling
Skin oils and moisture can build up over time. A quick wipe with a dry cloth prevents corrosion and residue.

Store in a cool, dry place
Avoid extreme heat, humidity, or long-term vehicle storage unless staged intentionally.

Applying Oil Under the Top Sight (Recommended Maintenance Step)

For best long-term performance, we recommend removing the top sight on your Byrna model and applying Byrna-approved oil to the internal channel beneath it. This allows oil to reach internal components and seals more effectively than external oiling alone.

This step is optional but highly recommended, especially for:

  • New launchers (break-in period)

  • Launchers that have not been oiled recently

  • Units used regularly for training or carry

⚠️ Important: Always use Byrna-approved oil. We highly recommend the Byrna Oil Kit for all pepper guns and Byrna launchers.

How to Remove the Top Sight Clip (All Byrna Models)

🔒 Safety first, always
Make sure your launcher is unloaded, the magazine is out, and there is no CO₂ installed before you start.

Video Removing the TopSight below.

🧷 Byrna top sights are held in by a long “clip-style” retainer
On Byrna models, the top sight isn’t removed like a normal rail with screws — it’s held in place by a long clip that can be released from the back of the launcher.

Paint can opener tool best tool to remove byrnas top sight

🛠️ Best tool for the job: a paint can opener tool
The easiest tool to remove the long clip is a simple metal paint can opener (the same little tool used to pop paint can lids). It gives you a controlled pry point without chewing up the launcher or slipping like a screwdriver.

🧲 Where to start: the back of the launcher
At the rear of the top sight/clip area, you can access the end of the long clip. Use the paint can opener to gently lift and slide the clip free with steady pressure. Go slow and keep your hand over the area so the clip doesn’t spring away.

⚠️ Critical note for Byrna SD & Byrna LE owners
The Byrna SD and Byrna LE have two small springs inside you need to watch out for when the top assembly comes loose. Keep light pressure as you remove the clip and work over a clean surface so nothing gets lost.

Byrna LE Only – Remove the Front LE Extension First

➡️ Remove the sight slowly and deliberately
➡️ Keep light pressure on the sight while lifting

The Byrna CL does not use the same spring setup, making removal simpler on that model.

Where to Apply the Oil

After the Top Sight Is Off – Apply Byrna Oil (Recommended)

🧴 We highly recommend the Byrna Oil Kit for all pepper guns
Once the top clip/sight area is open, apply Byrna-approved oil inside the internal channel (don’t overdo it). Pull the trigger to insure even coverage as you apply. This is one of the best ways to keep seals happy and your launcher performing consistently.

Reinstalling the Top Sight

🔍 Confirm everything is seated correctly first
Before reinstalling the top sight, take a moment to confirm that all internal components are properly positioned. If you are working with a Byrna SD or Byrna LE, make sure the two small internal springs are seated correctly and have not shifted.

(Pro tip  It make sure the springs stay in place you can dap a little grease on the bottom of them and place them in there area to keep them in place)

🧷 Align the top sight with the channel
Carefully position the top sight back into its channel along the top of the launcher. It should sit flush and straight before the retaining clip is reinstalled.

➡️ Slide the long retaining clip back in from the rear
Using steady pressure, guide the long clip back into place from the rear of the launcher.Be careful not to bend the clip with to much pressure

⚠️ Take your time on SD and LE models
As the clip slides into place on Byrna SD and Byrna LE models, keep light downward pressure on the top sight to prevent the internal springs from shifting. Go slow and controlled until the clip is fully seated.

🧩 Byrna LE only: reinstall the front LE extension
If you’re working on a Byrna LE, reinstall the front LE extension once the top sight and clip are secured. Align the extension properly and reinstall the screws snugly, without overtightening.

🔩 Final check
Once everything is back in place, confirm the top sight is secure, the clip is fully seated, and there is no movement. The launcher should feel solid with no rattling or looseness.

( Pull trigger to insure everything is good)

Ready for normal use
With the top sight reinstalled correctly, your Byrna launcher is properly maintained and ready for normal operation.

Why We Recommend This Method

🧠 It puts the oil exactly where it needs to go
Removing the top sight and applying oil directly into the internal channel allows lubrication to reach critical internal components instead of sitting on the surface. This method ensures the oil actually does its job.

🛡️ It protects internal seals and moving parts
Byrna launchers rely on internal components that must remain smooth and properly lubricated to function consistently. Applying oil from the top keeps these parts protected without flooding the system or causing buildup.
