Understanding fiber optic sights and their benefits
Fiber optic sights are a type of firearm sight that utilize a bundle of thin, transparent fibers to enhance visibility and target acquisition. These fibers gather ambient light and transmit it to the shooter’s eye, creating a bright and highly visible aiming point. Compared to traditional iron sights, fiber optic sights offer several advantages.
Firstly, fiber optic sights excel in low-light conditions especially glowing sights like TRU GLO. Their ability to gather and transmit light allows for clear sight picture even in dimly lit environments. This makes them ideal for self-defense situations where lighting conditions may vary.
Secondly, fiber optic sights offer a faster target acquisition. The bright, contrasting colors of the fiber optic elements draw the shooter’s attention to the front sight, allowing for quicker and more accurate aiming. This is especially beneficial in dynamic shooting scenarios where split-second decisions are crucial.
Lastly, fiber optic sights are extremely durable and low-maintenance. Unlike traditional iron sights that can be prone to corrosion or damage, fiber optic sights are constructed from sturdy materials that can withstand harsh conditions. Additionally, the fiber optic elements are protected within the sight housing, reducing the risk of accidental damage.

I just ended up purchasing the TruGlo 2mm replacement fibers and cut them to size:

Thanks guys!!
Install was more involved than I originally thought but wasn’t terrible.
- Remove the compensator/picatinny rail with an allen wrench (comes off in 2 pieces)
- Get a flathead screwdriver and pull out metal fork directly underneath the rear sights if pointing the gun as if to fire (be sure to pull straight out CAREFULLY to avoid bending)
- Carefully take off top slide. Be extremely careful not to lose the 2 tiny springs underneath the loaded indicator that flips up near the rear sights. These two springs are extremely small and will be lost easily
- Flip over the top slide and remove the metal retention clips for the sight tubes
- Place your new sight tubes into the slots and replace the metal retention clips back in (I had to reform mine a bit with pliers to get them to clip back in)
- I recommend using a few dabs of super glue at the ends away from the viewing point of your sight tubes. They will slide out of the end if you don’t do super glue, in my experience
You’re done! Now just reverse the process and put the compensator back on the same way you took it off and once again, be super careful with those tiny springs so they don’t fall into your Byrna. Let me know if you have any questions!
Testing and adjusting the fiber optic sights for optimal performance
After installing the fiber optic sights on your Byrna SD, it’s crucial to test and adjust them to ensure optimal performance. Here’s how you can do it:
1. Choose a suitable target: Select a target at a safe shooting range and set it at a reasonable distance. Start with a close-range target and gradually increase the distance as you become more comfortable with the sights.
2. Aim and shoot: Align the front and rear sights on the target and take a shot. Pay attention to the sight picture, focusing on the front sight and ensuring it is centered and level with the rear sights. Evaluate your shot placement and determine if any adjustments are necessary.
3. Adjust windage and elevation: Most fiber optic sights have windage and elevation adjustments to fine-tune your aim. Depending on your shot placement, use the appropriate tool to adjust the sights accordingly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for making these adjustments.
4. Repeat and refine: Take multiple shots and make any necessary adjustments until you achieve consistent shot placement. Remember, practice makes perfect, so continue to refine your shooting technique with the new fiber optic sights.
Testing and adjusting the fiber optic sights may require some trial and error. Be patient and take the time to find the perfect sight alignment for your shooting style. In the next section, we’ll discuss the maintenance and care required for your Byrna SD with fiber optic sights.
Maintenance and care for your Byrna SD & LE with fiber optic sights
Proper maintenance and care are essential to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Byrna SD with fiber optic sights. Here are some maintenance tips to keep in mind:
1. Regular cleaning: Clean your Byrna pepper gun after each use to remove any dirt, debris, or residue that may accumulate. Use a cleaning solution designed for firearms and a microfiber cloth to wipe down the slide, sights, and other components. Pay extra attention to the fiber optic elements, ensuring they remain clean and unobstructed.
2. Inspect for damage: Regularly inspect your fiber optic sights for any signs of damage or wear. Check for cracks, chips, or any other issues that may affect their visibility or functionality. If you notice any damage, contact the manufacturer for assistance or consider replacing the sights if necessary.
3. Protective storage: When not in use, store your Byrna SD in a secure and dry location. Consider using a protective case or holster to prevent accidental damage or exposure to moisture, dust, or other elements that may affect the sights’ performance.
4. Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents when cleaning your Byrna SD, as they can damage the fiber optic elements or other sensitive components. Stick to cleaning solutions specifically designed for firearms to ensure safe and effective cleaning.
By following these maintenance tips, you can prolong the lifespan of your Byrna SD and ensure that your fiber optic sights remain in excellent condition. In the next section, we’ll discuss common troubleshooting issues and how to fix them.
Common troubleshooting issues and how to fix them
While fiber optic sights are generally reliable and durable, occasional issues may arise. Here are some common troubleshooting issues you may encounter and how to fix them:
1. Fiber optic sight becomes dim or dull: Over time, the fiber optic elements may accumulate dirt or debris, causing them to appear dim or dull. To fix this issue, clean the fiber optic elements using a cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. Gently wipe away any dirt or residue, ensuring the fiber optic elements are clean and unobstructed.
2. Sights become loose: If you notice that your fiber optic sights are becoming loose, it could be due to recoil or vibrations. To fix this issue, apply a small amount of Loctite threadlocker to the retention screws and tighten them securely. Be careful not to overtighten, as it may damage the screws or sights.
3. Misalignment of sights: If you experience consistent misalignment of your sights, it may be due to improper installation or adjustment. Double-check the alignment of the sights and ensure they are level with the slide. If necessary, consult the manufacturer’s instructions or seek professional assistance to re-install or adjust the sights correctly.
4. Front sight falls off: In rare cases, the front sight may become loose or detach from the slide. If this happens, contact the manufacturer for assistance or consider replacing the front sight if necessary.
By addressing these common troubleshooting issues promptly, you can maintain the performance and reliability of your Byrna SD or LE with fiber optic sights.
